Graduand Dress Code
IMPORTANT NOTICE: To ensure the dignity of the occasion, all graduands are kindly reminded that adherence to the dress code stated below is required. Graduands who are not in compliance may be unable to participate in the Convocation Ceremony.
Dress Code for Female Graduands
- Female graduands must wear the BAJU KURUNG, LONG DRESS (MAXI), LONG-SLEEVED SHIRT WITH LONG SKIRT of any colour.

- The length of the skirt/dress should reach the ankle and do not have any slits on the left, right, back or front of dress.
- The dress/shirt must cover the body and reach the neck as well as having long sleeves reaching the wrists.

- Female graduands must wear formal shoes covering toes (black, brown and beige colour).
- Female graduands who are not wearing a headscarf must neatly groomed or tie their long hair
- Graduands who wear socks, must wear skin and black coloured socks ONLY.
- ONLY Female Indian Graduands are allowed to wear sari (covering the belly) as an option. No other dresses are permitted.
- ONLY Female Sikh Graduands are allowed to wear the Punjabi dress / kurti (Long-sleeved and long skirts)
- Any other traditional or national dresses are not permitted.
- UTM Convocation Attire (robe and bonnet/mortarboard) will be provided by the university.
Graduands are NOT allowed to:
- Coloured their hair
- Wear clothing’s that cover their faces (niqab or purdah)
- Wear short sleeved or sleeveless shirts
- Wear skirts/dresses not reaching the ankles and/or with slits
- Wear inappropriate shirts/dresses which uncovered any part of the body below the neck
- Wear t-shirts
- Wear jeans
- Wear any kind of pants, trousers or palazzo
- Wear too many piercing accessories or jewelleries including nose piercing
- Wear slippers, sandals, sports shoes or any kind of casual or uncovered shoes
Dress Code for Male Graduands
- Graduands must choose one of the following two options:
- Lounge Suit
- Graduands must wear a blazer/coat and formal trousers. (black or dark-coloured )
- Graduands must wear a long-sleeved shirt (remove white long sleeved)
- Graduands must wear a dark-coloured neck tie
- National Dress of Malaysia
- Graduands must wear the Baju Melayu Cekak Musang (black colour ONLY)
- Graduands must wear a samping (black patterned or colour ONLY)
- Lounge Suit
- Graduands must wear black formal shoes with long black socks
- ONLY Male Sikh Graduands are allowed to wear headwear (Black Turban ONLY)
- Any other traditional or national dresses are not permitted
- UTM Convocation Attire (robe and bonnet/mortarboard) will be provided by the university.
Graduands are NOT allowed to:
- Wear bow ties
- Wear t-shirts
- Wear khaki pants
- Wear jeans
- Wear short pants
- Wear short sleeved or sleeveless shirts
- Wear earrings or ear studs and bracelet
- Coloured their hair
- Have long hair (reaching the shirt collar)
- Wear slippers, sandals, sports shoes or any kind of casual or uncovered shoes
